Properly Brushing Your Teeth Can Keep Your Oral Health in Fantastic Shape
September 26, 2015
Surprisingly, there are many patients that don’t believe there’s a right and wrong way to brush teeth. How silly of some patients. There is, indeed, a correct and incorrect way to brush your pearly whites. If you’re straight-up either not brushing your teeth or going through the motions, you’re not doing your oral health any favors. When you’re not brushing correctly or not at all, you’re allowing tooth decay and other harmful bacteria to invade your teeth and cause all sorts of problems. Brushing and flossing can help you fight off these dental issues, all it takes is time and dedication. We want you to know that properly brushing your teeth can help put your oral health in the best shape possible.
At our office in Salinas, CA, we want you to know how important it is to properly care for your teeth, and that includes brushing and flossing correctly. We always encourage our patients to come in for an office visit twice a year, but practicing good dental hygiene at home is just as important. If you haven’t been brushing your teeth correctly, it’s never too late to learn how to properly brush! Dr. Klugman and Dr. Bianco are the dentists Salinas, CA residents can trust to get their teeth looking and feeling beautiful.
Good Brushing Techniques Encourage Good Oral Health
Brushing your teeth is very important. Ideally, every patient should be spending between 3-4 minutes brushing their teeth. If you’re having time spending that long brushing, try listening to one of your favorite songs or watch a T.V. program. You’ll be surprised at how fast the time will fly.
Below is the proper way to brush:
- Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle
- Use small and soft circular motions when moving across each tooth
- Be sure to hit every part of the tooth’s surface – inner, outer, chewing surface, behind the teeth, everywhere
- Don’t forget to brush at the top of the tooth, right near the gum line
- Give your tongue a good scrub to remove excess bacteria
But wait – there’s more! You didn’t think we’d forget about flossing, did you? It’s just as important as brushing and aids in ridding the mouth of harmful bacteria and food particles. Below is the proper flossing procedure:
- Thoroughly clean between the teeth so food particles are removed
- Get the top of the teeth so plaque and unseen food particles under the gum line are removed
- Shape the floss so it fits over each tooth and use up-and-down motions
Properly brushing your teeth will encourage your oral health to remain in great shape. Of course, visiting our office for a general checkup is just as important, too. We encourage residents in Spreckels, Blanco and Boronda to see us.
